With your money
Subscription upon subscription: transcription, translation, voice and an assistant — each with its own bill and limits.
AI assistant for Mac · everything on your computer
Give PhraseFold a voice note, recording, video, link, document or folder and it turns it into a transcript, translation, subtitles, meeting notes, spoken audio or a finished file. Everything runs on your Mac, without the cloud or a subscription.

Sound familiar?
Subscription upon subscription: transcription, translation, voice and an assistant — each with its own bill and limits.
Meetings, interviews and book drafts leave for other people’s servers and live there under other people’s rules.
No internet means no work. When prices or rules change, you are the last to know.
How it works
Apple Silicon runs neural networks itself: transcription, translation, speech synthesis. PhraseFold puts the models on your disk and then works on your processor — there are no minute counters and no request limits here.
Download and install
53 MB, Developer ID signed, notarized by Apple.
Pick your models
The app suggests ones that fit your Mac — you decide what to install.
Work
Transcription, translation and voice then run without the internet.

From source to result
“Transcribe the stand-up, translate it and build subtitles” — one phrase starts the whole chain. Progress stays visible in chat and the finished files land in your library.
Files, links, channels, playlists and batches become transcripts with speaker labels and timestamps; Listen Mode writes live audio as text.
Translate phrases, documents, books and SRT while keeping structure; use floating subtitles or create an experimental dubbed track.
Turn meetings into notes and action items, ask questions about recordings and documents, and find material by meaning in the library.
Action chains, watched folders, files and tables, dictation in any app and read-aloud remove repetitive work.
Who it is for
Recording → speaker-labelled text → decisions, actions and notes you can verify against the source.
File or link → transcript → translation → SRT, floating subtitles or an audio track.
Books and documents → translation, questions over your material, semantic search and read-aloud.
Dictation, folders, tables and multi-step actions run locally from a plain-language command.
The essentials
Privacy
Privacy here is not a checkbox in settings but how the program is built. Recordings, transcripts and files are never sent anywhere — any network monitor will show it.
Chats, transcripts and translations live only on this Mac and are never uploaded.
Models, link imports and update checks happen only when you ask. Web search is off by default. The one exception: once a day the app asks GitHub whether a newer link-downloader has shipped.
No sign-up, no profile. The key arrives by e-mail and is activated in the app.

EVERY FEATURE, IN DETAIL
Tier by tier: what is free, and what the paid licence adds. Tap any row to expand it — what it does, how it behaves in practice, and where the limit is.
Open the complete feature and edition reference →
Where to find it:Right toolbar → Dictate; the hotkey works over any app
Works on top of any app: mail, notes, chat, a search field. While the key is held the app listens to the microphone; release it and the finished text is inserted into the active field.
Where to find it:Home → Transcribe; links and the queue live on the same screen
Drop a file in — the app recognises the speech and files the result in your library: text, timestamps, export to TXT and SRT. The free tier works with files already on your computer.
Where to find it:Home → Translate → Text or File
Short fragments are translated on the spot, on device. PhraseFold and Studio add whole documents: the file keeps its structure — headings, lists, markup — and comes back in the same format.
Where to find it:Right toolbar → Listen
The app takes the system's own audio rather than the microphone: whatever plays on the Mac becomes running text. Useful on a call in a second language, in a lecture, or when you need the gist of a video fast.
Where to find it:Library → open a recording → Brief
On top of a meeting transcript the app builds a brief: the main topics, decisions and tasks. The full text stays beside it, so the summary can always be checked against what was actually said.
Where to find it:From a link → Video → Comments
Along with a video's text the app can save its comments as a separate file. Useful when the discussion carries more than the video does: corrections, links, reactions.
Where to find it:Home → Assistant
One sentence starts the whole chain: "transcribe the standup, translate it to English and build subtitles". Progress shows in the chat, results land in the library. The assistant answers from your material and can read its answer aloud.
Where to find it:From a link → Channel or playlist
Give a link to a channel, a playlist or a podcast feed — the app lists the episodes and transcribes them one after another into a single folder in your library.
Where to find it:Subtitles → Dubbing
Translated text can be spoken by a synthesised voice into an audio track. The feature is labelled experimental honestly: it works, but the quality depends on the material and the language.
Where to find it:Settings → Privacy and network
Recordings, transcripts, translations and history stay on this Mac. The app goes online in exactly these cases:
Where to find it:Settings → Models
On first launch the app looks at your Mac — chip, memory, free disk — and proposes a set of models to match. Nothing downloads until you agree; the list and the total size are shown first.
Where to find it:Settings → Licence and updates
After payment the key arrives by e-mail and is pasted into Settings. It is verified on device by digital signature — the app needs no activation server and tells nobody that you launched it.
Download PhraseFold and see it in one evening: most of your tasks don’t need the cloud.
